An article in the Chronicle of Education says that graduates with certain graduate degrees are in extremely high demand ( http://chronicle.com/article/As-Data-Proliferate-So-Do/144363/ ). As our society and economy have become increasingly data-driven, the demand for people who can collect, manage, understand, and use that data has hugely increased. Also, people are intensely seeking those data-driven graduate degrees, so that degree programs that once had to actively seek students now have to turn them away.

With globalization, the people in our economy have had to compete for their jobs with overseas worker who are often willing to work for much less money. America therefore needs be able to move its employment into jobs that require greater learning, knowledge, and sophistication so that there is greater productivity and less competition from overseas workers. Clearly the revolution in the generation and availability of "big data" represents an opportunity to create such advanced jobs in America, and one major way for people to get into those jobs is by earning an advanced graduate degree in data analysis.

These types of jobs and the graduate degrees that go with them are often called "informatics" or "analytics" and they often are a combination of statistical know-how, computer/software skills, and an analytical mind-set that enables the worker to be able to understand, interpret, and communicate "what all that data means".

It seems to me that earning such a degree could be a major life strategy, since the use of data analysis is unlikely to go away anytime soon, so the availability of these type of jobs should continue into the future. A study cited in the Chronicle of Higher Education story "predicted a work-force gap of 1.5 million managers and analysts with the skills to decipher and translate data patterns for decision-making". The graduate degree cited in the article were Master's degrees, and included Master's degrees in business analytics and Master's degrees in informatics.

Such degree programs are often available online, and on this website they would be listed on the Technology online degrees page.

Greorgetown University research has shown that those earning a graduate degree generally earn substantially more on average than those with just the bachelor degree. Based on the information provided in the report (http://cew.georgetown.edu/whatsitworth/) I estimate that those with a graduate degree typically earn about 40% more, however the report shows that the average pay boost from a graduate degree can vary a lot, depending on the person's major. For example, those who had a bachelor degree major in "Health and Medical Preparatory" averaged 190% more earnings with their graduate degree, and those who earn a bachelor degree in "Miscellaneous Social Sciences" averaged 134% more with their graduate degree. The research found that the median pay advantage for those with graduate degrees who had earned their bachelor's in Psychology/Social Work was 43%; for Health majors it was 50%; for Business majors it was 40%; and for Education majors it was 33%. However, there were a few fields, such as Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology, Studio Arts, and Petroleum Engineering where the boost was relatively small (in the single digits).

When you consider that the graduate degree lasts essentially for the rest of your career, and that you are likely to continue to benefit from it for all those years, it is very likely to be very much worth your while to earn the graduate degree money-wise. When you consider the boost in knowledge of your desired field, and the boost in prestige as well, it is easy to see why earning a graduate degree could really benefit you.

Of course as I previously mentioned in a prior post, those with liberal arts majors are particularly likely to benefit from a graduate degree. A study by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, that was cited in the Chronicle of Higher Education, found that liberal arts majors make less than professional majors right out of college, but the liberal arts majors median salaries are similar to those who had the other majors, if the liberal arts majors earned a graduate degree. The Chronicle of Higher Education article is at http://chronicle.com/article/How-Liberal-Arts-Majors-Fare/144133/ .

Additional Notes: I intend to include on this site colleges and universities that apparently have (at least) regional accreditation, however the presence of a university, college, or other site on this page is not an endorsement or recommendation. Grad School Links are here only to present possible college and university sites that may be of interest to some of those seeking an accredited online or distance graduate school degree. The site is primarily concerned with degree programs, although you may find certificate programs, and information on non-degree-seeking classes or courses. So, this site may be useful to those seeking a class, course, or certificate. You may find that a college or university is presented redundantly on this site. This site has pages that are dedicated to specific areas of interest. There is a page for Business degrees, and others for Education, Engineering / Technology / Computer, doctorates, accreditation organizations, and new programs. A graduate degree, also termed a postgraduate degree, may be a master degree, such as a Master of Arts (M. A.), Master of Science (M. S.), or Master of Business Administration (MBA),or doctorate degree, such as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.), Doctor of Psychology (Psy. D.), Doctor of Education ( Ed. D.), Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), and so on. The term grad school is often used as an abbreviation for graduate school, the terms graduate school and grad school are considered equivalent on this site. Featured online graduate school degree programs may have a quota of information requests they will accept, and if the quota becomes used-up, their link may lead to a 'multi online graduate school alternative search' website. If that should happen while you are using this site you can feel free to just exit from the 'multi online graduate school alternative search' website, or you can use that page if you wish. I try to remove links with used-up quotas as soon as I notice them, but sometimes I am delayed getting them removed. Usually, you must already have an accredited bachelor's degree to start an online graduate school degree program. Additionally, some online graduate school degree programs may have additional requirements for admission and a few prospective students may be screened out from receiving the information package if they don't satisfy a minimum requirement, such as a GPA-level. I strive to assure that the information on this site is current and accurate, however the information may change without notice to me so I can not guarantee total accuracy. A college or university may use the term external degree program where another may use the term distance program. The terms external and distance are considered equivalent on this site. Thanks for visiting this site and good luck with your graduate studies.

Recent research indicates a positive association between advancing education and increases in average salary, however no college, university or graduate school can guarantee a specific salary or increase because that is likely to depend on a number of factors including your education, but also including region, job experience, available opportunities, individual characteristics, personal history, demand, "the economy", etc. Web site visits may also be monitored thru Google, Bing, or other analytics, which may include use of cookies, and would be subject to their privacy policies.
